Introduction:

Cumin is the dried seed of the herb Cuminum cyminum. The cumin plant grows to 12–20 in tall and is harvested by hand. It is an annual herbaceous plant, with a slender, glabrous, branched stem that is 8–12 in tall . China and India are the main producers of cumin, which produces 70% of the world supply and consumes 90% of it(which means that India consumes 63% of the world's cumin). Mexico is another major producer. Around 300,000 tons of cumin per year are produced worldwide. Cumin Seeds are very Popular in Asian, North African and Latin American Cuisines as it's use as essential ingredient in many mixed spices,sauce(Chutney) and curry powders.Cumin has a warm, earthy flavor and aroma with a bit of both sweetness and bitterness.

It is used to flavor rice, stuffed vegetables, many savory dishes and curries. It combines well with cilantro and is widely used in dishes.

Cumin Seeds Reference in the Book of Isaiah :

It is mentioned three times in Isaiah 28 (verses 25, 27, and 28). The best known reference is in Matthew 23:23 (Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.) The seeds are still often threshed by beating them with a stick as recorded in Isaiah 28:28.

Is he forever cultivating the soil and never planting it? Does he not Finally plant his seeds for dill, cumin, wheat, barley, and spelt, each in its own section of the land? The Farmer knows just what to do, for God has given him understanding.He doesn't thresh all his crops the same way. A heavy sledge is never used on dill; rather it is beaten with a light stick. A Thrashing wheel is never rolled on cumin; instead it is beaten softly with a hail. Bread grain is easily crushed, so he doesn't keep on pounding it. He thrashes it under he wheels of a cart, but he doesn't pulverize it. The Lord almighty is a wonderful teacher, and he gives the farmer great wisdom.

The two major types of cumin seeds found in the market are white cumin seeds and the black cumin seeds. The white cumin seeds are the most commonly found seeds that are used in cuisines. However, the black cumin seeds are smaller in shape than the white one and also have a sweet aroma.
